In this clip from God of Gamblers, the main character wins a game of dice through what may be called superhuman ability or cheating. It is not merely supernatural luck, though that may play a part in it. In the Asian gambling genre, “cheating” is just another word for “really good at gambling.” It’s a totally different outlook than found in American gambling films like Rounders or The Color of Money. American gambling films, though they may feature larcenous characters, seem preoccupied with fairness and morality, whereas the Asian films embrace life, unfairness and immorality included. The Asian gambling films seem to say, “Yes, the game is rigged. But that’s gamble. That’s life. And it’s wonderful.”
